Transcendental Meditation often carries a sense of mystique due to certain teachers acting as gate keepers to it. They promote the idea that it can only be taught properly through them. In reality the practice of Transcendental Meditation is very simple, like with other forms of meditation. The difference between TM and other forms of meditation, is the use of a mantra rather than the breath.
What is a mantra? In Transcendental Meditation a mantra is a repeated sound that you silently focus on while meditating.
Transcendental Meditation originated in India. The techniques go back thousands of years as part of the Vedic tradition. They play important roles in both the Yoga and Ayurveda systems.
Yoga guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi developed Transcendental Meditation in the 1950s. Swami Brahmananda Saraswati, known as Guru Dev taught Maharishi meditation techniques which he later passed on. Maharishi Mahesh and Guru Dev shared a close bond and it was Guru Dev who instructed Maharishi to spread the practice of meditation around the world. Maharishi developed and popularised Transcendental Meditation and went on tour teaching it in 1955.
Through celebrity endorsements and connections with university academics, Transcendental Meditation grew into a global phenomenon thanks to Guru Maharishi Mahesh.
Transcendental Meditation encourages one to find peace and awareness through quietly repeating a mantra, allowing the mind to drift away into a tranquil and relaxed state. This peacefulness can bring about higher levels of joy, energy, and imagination. The philosophy of Transcendental Meditation is not based in religion, the reason for teaching it is to create a better and more peaceful planet.
For the past four decades, over two hundred universities and research institutions around the world have been exploring benefits of Transcendental Meditation. They have found Transcendental Mediation helps us in different areas. Some of the benefits discovered in the studies include:
Reduced Stress
Increased intelligence and creativity
Reduced insomnia
Reduced risk of cardiovascular-related mortality
Decreased high blood pressure
And more
To practice Transcendental Mediation you would need to start with a mantra. A mantra is a Sanskrit sound that comes from the ancient Vedic traditions of India. Your mantra is often given to you by a teacher. A mantra for Transcendental Mediation is a sound that has no meaning. When you meditate you silently repeat the mantra in your mind. The mantra is a point where attention gently rests, gradually the mantra itself is transcended into silence. Meditate twice a day for 15-20 minutes sat silently on a mat with legs crossed in a comfortable position.
People often burn incense and essential oils to help them meditate. These fragrances can enhance the benefits of meditation. Read our other posts to learn more about incense and essential oils.
